The history of Knight Frank
The Early Years 1896-1911
Founded in 1896, Knight Frank & Rutley began as a valuations, surveying and auctions business. Our first sale takes place in London, and we make a name for ourselves by selling the iconic Crystal Palace to Lord Plymouth for £210,000.
Making History 1912-1927
Cecil Chubb buys Stonehenge, Winston Churchill buys Chartwell and The Duke of Westminster sells Grosvenor House, all through Knight Frank & Rutley. We advise on the site assembly of the landmark BBC Broadcasting House in London.
From London, to Lancashire, to Lagos 1928-1965
We sell the majority of Lytham St Anne’s in Lancashire and the historic Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire. Our ambitions drift to new horizons. We open a Geneva office, and establish a presence in Nigeria.
International Growth 1966-1996
We establish joint ventures in New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. The strength of our international partnerships grows, and in 1996, ‘Rutley’ is dropped from our name. Knight Frank as you know it is born.
The Olympics 1997-2005
In 2003, we become a Limited Liability Partnership, and the year after we’re ranked as one of The Sunday Times 100 Best UK Companies to Work For. Seizing a once in a generation opportunity, we advise on the development of London’s 2012 Olympic Village.
Baker Street Beginnings 2005-2020
Our reach expands to more than 165 offices in 36 countries across six continents. We move to our global HQ in Baker Street, London, and are appointed as the agent for the Empire State Building, and The Shard, the tallest landmark building in Europe.
Present: 125 Years and Counting
We celebrated 125 years of Knight Frank in 2021, forming a global partnership with US based commercial real estate firm Cresa. My Knight Frank launches: a library of research publications celebrating our legacy and our future.
The Future
So, what’s next? The future of the real estate industry is in our hands. It’s up to us to continue to build on 125 years of rich history, put our clients at the heart of everything we do, and look to the future.
Different routes into property
There is no single route into a successful career in property.
Some of our programmes are designed for students studying RICS-accredited degrees, while others are open to candidates from a wide range of academic backgrounds. We value transferable skills, diverse perspectives and a genuine curiosity about the built environment. Whether you’ve studied surveying, geography, economics, business, history or something completely different, we’re interested in the strengths, experiences and potential you can bring.
You don’t need all the answers today
Starting your career can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. We know that making decisions about your future can feel daunting. Whether you’re choosing a career path, exploring different industries or thinking about what success looks like for you, it’s natural to feel uncertain, particularly in a competitive job market.
Our goal is to help you make informed choices by providing clear information about our pathways, opportunities and application process. We encourage you to explore the different areas of our business and find the route that best aligns with your interests, strengths and long-term aspirations.
APPLICATIONS OPEN
We only accept one application per recruitment season, so candidates should apply to the role that best aligns with their skills, interests, and career aspirations.
